Fogo Island Arts Corporation, Fogo Island, Newfoundland

Thanks to a series of modernist art studios on stilts, this sleepy, secluded fishing community, just of the northeast coast of Newfoundland is suddenly becoming a cultural destination.

The studios were converted from rugged saltbox houses and churches, overlook the Atlantic and welcome artists and writers as part of an international residency program – as well as tourists for tours. A modern hotel with twenty-nine rooms is expected to open in 2012 and will add to the island’s appeal.
